The two measurements that matter
Floor to the exact surface the dog must reach: mattress top, sofa cushion, tailgate lip, or vehicle entry. Measure to the surface, not to the frame.
Clear horizontal space from the destination, plus room for a straight approach and a straight exit. Furniture, door swing and rugs all reduce usable run.
How the calculator works
The floor, the rise and the ramp form a right triangle. Ramp length is √(rise² + run²). The angle is arctan(rise ÷ run). Using the same unit for both keeps the result consistent.
Reference points for slope
No published standard exists for canine ramp angle. The closest hard reference is the US accessibility standard for wheelchair ramps, which caps running slope at 1:12 — about 4.8°. That is a human accessibility standard, not a canine recommendation. It is offered here only so “gentle” has a measurable meaning.

Five things owners get wrong
“A longer ramp is always better.” — Partly true. Length only helps if the floor run exists to support it. A 72 in ramp forced into 40 in of space is steeper than a 48 in ramp used properly.
“The listed length is the walking surface.” — False. Many listings state folded or overall length. The usable surface is often several inches shorter.
“One ramp covers the whole house.” — False. A 24 in bed and a 30 in SUV differ by 4° at the same run. Measure each destination.
“Weight rating is the main spec.” — Incomplete. Rating matters, but mid-span flex, surface traction and usable width decide whether the dog will use it.
“If the angle is right, the dog will use it.” — False. Geometry is necessary, not sufficient. Introduction, traction and confidence decide adoption.

What ramp angle should I aim for?
No canine standard exists. As an engineering reference, the US accessibility standard for wheelchair ramps is 1:12, about 4.8°. Most home dog ramps land between 18° and 30° because household floor space is limited. The practical rule: measure your available run first, then accept the angle it produces or find more space.
How do I measure the rise correctly?
Measure vertically from the finished floor to the exact surface the dog steps onto — the top of the mattress, the sofa cushion, or the vehicle floor. Not the bed frame, not the bumper. Compressed cushions read differently from uncompressed ones, so measure with normal weight on the surface if possible.
How much floor space do I actually need?
The calculated run, plus approach and exit room. A dog needs a straight line into the ramp and a straight line off it. Budget at least one body length beyond the ramp foot at each end. A 72 in run in a 78 in hallway will not work in practice.
Why is the ramp longer than the run I measured?
Because the ramp is the hypotenuse of the triangle, not the floor. With a 24 in rise over a 48 in run, the floor distance is 48 in but the ramp surface is 53.7 in. The steeper the setup, the larger the gap between the two numbers.
Does the listed product length equal the usable surface?
Often not. Listings may state folded length, overall length including hinges, or shipping carton length. Look for the walking-surface dimension specifically. If the listing does not state it, ask before buying — a two-inch difference changes the angle.
My room is too small for the ramp the calculator gave me. What now?
Use stairs. Steps gain the same height in roughly a third of the floor space, and forcing a ramp into a short run simply makes it steeper than the stairs would have been. This is the single most common reason a ramp gets returned.
Do I need a different ramp for the car?
Usually yes. A 24 in bed and a 30 in SUV cargo lip differ by roughly 4° at the same run. A vehicle ramp also needs a secure top contact on a surface that may be smooth or angled. Recalculate for each destination.
What width does my dog need?
Wider than the dog’s stance, with margin for drift. Narrow ramps make dogs place feet near the edge, which increases hesitation. Check usable width separately from length — the calculator does not address it.
How much weight rating do I need?
More than the dog’s weight, because dynamic load during movement exceeds static weight. Also check mid-span flex: a ramp that meets the rating but visibly bends underfoot will be refused by many dogs regardless of the number.
My dog refuses to use the ramp. Is the angle wrong?
Not necessarily. Refusal is more often about traction, surface noise, instability at the top contact, or lack of introduction. Set the ramp flat on the floor first and let the dog cross it voluntarily before raising it.
Can I use the calculator in centimeters?
Yes. Select centimeters and enter both values in centimeters. The angle is unit-independent — only the length output changes unit. Never mix inches and centimeters in one calculation.
Is a steeper ramp harmful?
This tool cannot answer that. Slope tolerance depends on the individual dog’s strength, joints, balance and confidence — none of which are measurable from geometry. If you are unsure whether a slope is appropriate for your dog, discuss it with your veterinarian.

Rise — The vertical height from the floor to the destination surface.
Run — The horizontal floor distance the ramp covers, measured out from the destination.
Ramp surface length — The hypotenuse; the distance the dog actually walks. Always longer than the run.
Slope ratio — Run divided by rise, written 1:X. A 1:3 ratio means three units of floor per unit of height.
Usable walking surface — The tread the dog can safely use, excluding hinges, lips and folded overhang.
Top contact — Where the ramp meets the destination. A gap or unstable lip here causes most refusals.
Mid-span flex — How much the ramp bends under load at its centre. Not covered by weight rating alone.
Approach room — Clear floor beyond the ramp foot allowing a straight entry and exit.
