You watched your dog eat this morning and something looked off — more neck extension, a wider stance, a slower pace than last year.
Bowl height is one of the few things you can change today and undo tomorrow. Here is how to pick a starting height, and what the research actually says before you raise anything.

What the evidence actually says about raised bowls
Raised feeders are widely sold as a comfort or health improvement. The published evidence is more mixed than most listings suggest, and it deserves a straight answer.
A large prospective study of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV, commonly called bloat) in large and giant breed dogs, conducted at Purdue University and published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2000, found that having a raised feed bowl was associated with an increased risk of GDV in the breeds studied. The association was substantial.
What this does and does not mean:
- It is an observed association in large and giant breeds, not a demonstrated cause.
- It does not establish that raised bowls are harmful to small or medium dogs, or to cats.
- It does not mean raised bowls have no use — owners report them for very different reasons, including reduced neck extension in dogs with limited mobility.
- It does mean a raised feeder should not be presented as a health benefit, and that large and giant breed owners should discuss it with their veterinarian rather than treat it as an obvious upgrade.
Turn the output into a controlled trial
- Measure the finished station from the floor to the rim.
- Confirm the bowl cannot spin, tip, or rattle excessively.
- Keep food, portion, location and routine unchanged.
- Observe one ordinary meal from the side.
- Record approach, stance, pace, spills and station movement.
- Repeat before deciding; novelty is not a stable result.

Five things owners get wrong
“Raised bowls prevent bloat.” — The opposite association was found in large and giant breeds in the Purdue study. Never treat a raised feeder as bloat prevention.
“Measure to the top of the head.” — False. Measure to the withers, the top of the shoulder, with the animal standing naturally.
“Bowl depth doesn’t matter.” — False. A 4 in deep bowl on a 12 in stand puts the food surface at the same place as a shallow bowl on a 15 in stand. Depth is part of the calculation.
“The same rule works for cats.” — False. Cats need a lower target ratio and a different setup entirely, including whisker clearance and low-traffic placement.
“One meal tells you if it works.” — False. Novelty changes behaviour for several meals. Observe repeatedly before concluding anything.
When not to rely on a calculator
Stop and seek veterinary guidance for reduced appetite, weight change, difficulty swallowing, repeated coughing or gagging, vomiting, pain, marked thirst change, or a sudden change in eating posture. Do not use the output to override a prescribed feeding setup.

Is the ratio different for cats?
Yes. Cats use 0.50 to 0.65 times shoulder height, a deliberately lower target. Cats are far less studied than dogs on this question, and a lower setup reduces the chance of forcing an unnatural eating posture.
Why is the range so wide?
Because chest depth, neck length and conformation vary enormously between animals of identical shoulder height. A narrow range would imply a precision that does not exist. Use the range to start a trial, then observe.
The calculator gave me a range no ceramic set can reach. What now?
That happens with tall dogs. Ceramic elevated sets generally sit in the 3 to 6 in range. Above that you need a purpose-built stand with a stated height, and you should check that figure on the listing rather than assuming.
The calculator says no stand is needed. What now?
Your bowl depth already meets or exceeds the target rim height. A floor bowl is appropriate. Adding a stand would push the food surface above the useful range.
How many meals should a trial run for?
At least five to seven ordinary meals, with food, portion, location and routine unchanged. Novelty alters behaviour for the first several meals, so a single observation tells you very little.
My cat won’t use the raised bowl. Is the height wrong?
Possibly, but placement is more often the cause. Cats refuse feeding stations in high-traffic areas, near appliances, or where they cannot see the room. Keep the familiar bowl available and change one variable at a time.
Does a raised bowl help a dog with limited mobility?
Some owners use them to reduce neck extension when bending is difficult. That is a setup comfort question, not a treatment. If your dog’s eating posture has changed recently, that change itself is worth mentioning to your veterinarian.
What about stability and spills?
A station that rocks, spins or slides will be avoided regardless of height. Check that the bowl locks into the stand and that the base does not travel on your floor type before judging the height.
Can I use this if my vet prescribed a feeding setup?
No. A prescribed setup takes priority over any calculator output. This tool is for owners with no specific veterinary instruction who want a reasonable starting point for a reversible trial.
