Someone told you a raised bowl would be easier on your dog’s neck. Someone else told you raised bowls cause bloat.
Both claims are stated with more confidence than the evidence supports. Here is what is actually known, and how to run a trial that gives you a real answer for your dog.
Quick answer
Start at 0.60–0.75 × shoulder height for the bowl rim, minus bowl depth to get stand height. Then run a seven-meal trial changing only that one variable.
One important caveat first: in large and giant breeds, a published study associated raised bowls with increased bloat risk. Read that section before buying anything.
Read this before you raise anything
Raised feeders are widely sold as a comfort or health improvement. The published evidence is more mixed than most listings suggest.
A large prospective study of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV, commonly called bloat) in large and giant breed dogs, conducted at Purdue University and published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2000, found that a raised feed bowl was associated with an increased risk of GDV in the breeds studied.
What that does and does not mean:
- It is an observed association in large and giant breeds, not a demonstrated cause.
- It does not establish harm for small or medium dogs.
- It does mean a raised feeder must never be sold or bought as a health benefit.
- If your dog is a large or giant breed, raise the question with your veterinarian before changing the station.

Measure the feeding station
- Have the dog stand naturally on a level, non-slip floor.
- Measure floor to the top of the shoulder (the withers).
- Measure the stand from floor to bowl rim.
- Measure bowl depth from rim to the usual food surface.
- Record the base footprint and whether the bowl locks into place.

Change only the station height. If food, room, bowl shape, and height all change together, you cannot tell which variable affected behavior.

Five things owners get wrong
“Raised bowls prevent bloat.” — The opposite association was found in large and giant breeds. Never treat a raised feeder as bloat prevention.
“Higher is better for a tall dog.” — Only up to a point. A rim above the shoulder forces the dog to reach upward, which is its own awkward posture. The target sits below the shoulder, not at it.
“Bowl depth is irrelevant.” — False. A 4 in deep bowl on a 12 in stand puts the food surface where a shallow bowl on a 15 in stand would. Depth is part of the arithmetic.
“One meal shows whether it works.” — False. Novelty alters behaviour for several meals. That is exactly why the protocol runs to seven.
“If he eats faster, it is working.” — Not a conclusion. Pace changes for many reasons, including competition and excitement. Speed is an observation, not a verdict.

What height should an elevated dog bowl be?

Floor to the withers — the ridge between the shoulder blades — with the dog standing naturally on a level surface. Not to the head, not to the highest point of the back.
My dog spills food everywhere. Will a raised bowl fix it?
Sometimes, but check stability first. A station that rocks or slides produces far more spillage than a low rim does, and it is the cheaper problem to solve. Change one thing at a time so you know which one worked.
Does my senior dog need a raised bowl?
Not automatically. Some owners use them to reduce how far a dog with limited mobility has to bend. That is a setup comfort question. If your dog’s eating posture has recently changed, the change itself is worth mentioning to your veterinarian.
How long should the trial run?
Seven ordinary meals: two at baseline, three with the new height, two repeating whichever setup looked better. Keep food, portion, room and time identical throughout.
Can I change the bowl and the height at the same time?
You can, but then you will not know which change caused the result. If the answer matters to you, change one variable and hold everything else constant.
What if my dog just ignores the new station?
Keep the familiar bowl available and end the trial. Refusal is information, not failure. Forcing a station change with a dog that is avoiding it usually costs more than it gains.
Ceramic, stainless or plastic?
Ceramic and stainless are easier to clean thoroughly and hold shape. Plastic scratches over time, and scratches hold residue. Whatever the material, the bowl must lock into the stand rather than spin inside it.
Two dogs, one station — does that change anything?
Yes. Competition changes eating pace independently of height, and it will contaminate your trial. Feed them separately for the seven meals, then decide.
My vet gave me feeding instructions. Do these apply?
No. A prescribed feeding setup takes priority over anything here. This guide is for owners with no specific veterinary instruction who want a reasonable starting point.
